Australia's first mind-controlled bionic arm

13 June 2017

Alan Newey is the first patient in Australia to be fitted with a mind-controlled bionic arm.

Herald Sun journalist Brigid O’Connell has followed Alan since 2015, when he underwent radical surgery at The Alfred’s Targeted Muscle Reinnervation (TMR) unit, followed by months of muscle and cognitive training at Epworth Rehabilitation.

As a result of his ongoing rehabilitation Alan, an occupational workplace safety speaker, is gaining increasing use of his new arm, 17 years after losing the limb in an industrial workplace accident.
