Local artist shares his talent

Tuesday 20 June

For local student and artist Alex Niglio the opportunity to design and paint a wall mural at Epworth Eastern was an exciting and rewarding challenge.

It not only allowed him to gain valuable industry experience but he has also significantly enhanced the sites café area and hospital grounds.

The artwork commission was part of the refurbishment of Hudsons Coffee and the Epworth Eastern Bistro.  Epworth have a long standing partnership with Box Hill Institute as many nurses who study at BHI undertake their placement training at the site.  This project provided a welcome extension to that partnership.

Studying an Advanced Diploma in Graphic Design at Box Hill Institute (BHI), Alex was one of two students nominated by the Institute and both submitted a portfolio of design examples and attended an interview to be involved in the project.

In a street art style, the design incorporated local themes with the inclusion of traditional colours from the local Chinese community and cherry blossoms a symbol of happiness, love and joy.

‘The artwork really draws people into the space and provides a welcome distraction in the clinical setting,’ said Nicholas Lyall, Hudsons Project Manager.

The mural was installed on Friday 10 March and feedback from staff, patients and visitors has been very positive. A time-lapse video was also taken during the installation.

Artist Alex thanked the project team for the opportunity to be involved.  ‘This project has allowed me to gain valuable industry experience and I was incredibly excited to be involved in the project’, said Alex.

Following the success of the collaboration it is likely that this will become an annual partnership event between the three parties – Epworth Eastern, Hudsons Coffee and Box Hill Institute.
