S-W Regional Cancer Centre thanks Peter’s Project

1 August 2015

Respected local fundraiser and founder of Peter’s Project Vicki Jellie, today fulfilled a community dream of raising $5 million towards the $30 million construction costs of the South West Regional Cancer Centre, in Warrnambool.

The cheque was handed to Epworth HealthCare, who won the tender to design, build and operate the Radiation Oncology centre for public patients.

Peter’s Project began in Sept 2008 when Ms Jellie resolved to lobby far and wide - local, state and federal governments; businesses; sporting clubs; cafes, bars and traders - to receive both a commitment and funding to build a fully-operational cancer centre in the South West region.

Ms Jellie said that the Peter’s Project Foundation was extremely proud and excited to be able to deliver the promised $5 million community contribution toward the construction of SWRCC.

“The communities of the South West have worked tirelessly for the past six years to make this vital facility a reality. Without such amazing community generosity and support, the dream of specialised cancer treatment would never have come true.

Everyone who has donated can stand very proudly together knowing we have achieved such an amazing outcome that will benefit so many in their time of need,” Ms Jellie said.

“We are thrilled to be working together with the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services and Epworth Healthcare to ensure that cancer patients in our region will be able to access a state-of-the-art facility in regional Victoria. It is exciting to see the construction well underway and literally growing upward every day.”

Mr Paul Fenton said that Peter’s Project has the respect and love of the whole community and certainly the admiration of the State Government and Epworth, who are managing the construction of the SWRCC.

“When it opens next year, the centre will have capacity to treat up to 500 patients a year, helping patients in the region avoid travelling to Geelong and Melbourne for radiotherapy treatment,” Mr Fenton said.

“Overall the project has met all its target dates, and $1.4m of work has been awarded to local trades to date such as Southern Victorian Plumbing, Southwest Traffic Control and Warrnambool Crane Hire and others who have supplied Surveying, Concrete pumping, Fencing, Demolition, and Carpentry. Since February this year, when building began, we have up to 31 workers on the site, sourced from both local and Melbourne contractors.”

Ms Jellie said that full financial commitment from the Victorian State Government for $15million was gained in 2013; and the Federal Government has provided $10million and today we are adding our $5million,” Ms Jellie said.

“Our regional community chooses to continue to support the Peter’s Project Foundation into the future, so that once operational, the care and comfort needs within the South West Regional Cancer Centre and the Peter’s Project Community Support Centre can be met.”
