What is Gout?

24th August 2017

Gout is the most common inflammatory arthritis condition in men world-wide. Epworth Rheumatologist Dr Indi Rasaratnam discusses the condition -  its symptoms and remedies – with ABC Libbi Gorr in her regular Sunday morning medical segment.

Dr Rasaratnam says it is common in men because men have higher levels of uric acid. It usually affects one or two joints and is extremely painful. Diet contributes to around 10% of cases and the aggravators are usually seafood, red meat, tomatoes, and alcohol, especially beer. However there is not clear evidence that proves this absolutely. Dr Rasaratnam says tomatoes have high purine content that are broken down to uric acid. Gout is also linked to diabetes and hypertension.
