Intensive Care Unit

Opened in September 2000, Epworth Freemasons Critical Care Unit (CCU) is a state of the art, 8 bed combined Intensive Care and Coronary Care Unit, with an additional separate 4 bed Telemetry Unit.

Treating over 1200 patients annually with a wide variety of medical problems, the close knit and friendly team, continually strives to provide the very best of Medical and Nursing care both in the CCU and (via MET and ‘Code Blue' Teams,) throughout the hospital.

Our Critical Care Unit is a modern, bright and open facility with 2 single rooms (with ensuites), (one equipped for isolation) and 3, large 2 bed rooms.

The Unit uses Phillips ‘Touch screen' monitors, Bennett 840 Ventilators and Prisma Haemofiltration.

Backed by 24 hour on site Medical cover, our CCU is fed internally from the operating theatres, wards and the Emergency Department. In addition we service external patients directed to us by Bed Brokers and the Victorian Adult Emergency Retrieval and Coordination Service.

Epworth Freemasons Critical Care Unit provides care for an extensive array of adult patients, including cardiac, respiratory, post surgical, medical, gynaecological, Obstetric and oncology.

The majority of staff within the unit have critical care qualifications and come from diverse backgrounds and experience. There is an extensive nurse bank and the Unit is renowned for valuing and rewarding these highly qualified staff. Our Unit also supports post-graduate critical care students studying at The University of Melbourne and encourages rotations by graduates and ward nurses.

The benefits of a flexible self-rostering system and 12 hour shifts are enjoyed by all staff and individual needs such as child care commitments are generally well accommodated for.

Professional development is facilitated via regular education days and financial support is often provided to attend conferences and seminars. A Clinical Nurse Educator has the ability to assess the needs of each staff member and assist with their educational development. Research, Quality Improvement, and Infection Control portfolios facilitate the progressive nature of the Unit.
