About Us

Epworth Medical Foundation (the Foundation) is the fundraising arm of Epworth HealthCare. It was established in 1982 as a Public Fund to assist Epworth, a not for profit hospital, by raising funds for the provision and improvement of patient services, buildings and equipment. To learn more, go to Why Epworth HealthCare needs your support.

The Foundation is run by the honorary Board of Trustees, Chairman and a small team of three full-time and one part-time staff member. In addition we contract a professional events organiser on a part-time basis, and many volunteers all working to raise money for Epworth HealthCare.

Funds are raised through regular programs of donor development and acquisition that include direct mail appeals, donor matching to specific projects and programs, gala events, community groups, planned gifts and bequests. Grants and sponsorships are also sought from trusts, foundations, and corporations.

We are enthusiastically supportive of all Epworth HealthCare sites and aim to ensure all of our fundraising activities are applied to where they will do the most good. Thanks to the generous support of the many people who give their time voluntarily, fundraising and administrative expenses are kept low to the absolute minimum.

Why Epworth HealthCare needs your support

Epworth HealthCare is an independent, not for profit hospital group with no shareholders providing a model of care in which the patient is the focus of all activity. Epworth provides services that meet community health care needs rather than simply those that deliver the best returns. The Group has a reputation for excellence in health care and a history of medical ‘firsts’. Epworth receives no direct government support - either State or Federal.

Role in the community

Epworth HealthCare frequently pioneers new services with none or limited reimbursement. This has resulted in a history of medical ‘firsts’.

Epworth HealthCare is a teaching hospital with links to The University of Melbourne, Monash and Deakin. Epworth supports a Chair of Nursing and a Director of Education the latter supervising the regular rotation of final year medical students from The University of Melbourne.

The hospital underwrites numerous research projects. For example, Epworth HealthCare is in partnership with The University of Melbourne in a new Musculoskeletal Research Centre which was launched at Epworth Richmond in 2004.

Epworth HealthCare maintains, at great expense, an Emergency Department the equivalent of any in the public system.

The contribution made by Epworth HealthCare in providing services that are substantially unfunded (e.g. Emergency Department) and its various teaching and research programs, is estimated to be valued at over $7 million per year. Epworth HealthCare receives less than $3 million per year in community support.
