Epworth Geelong Teaching Hospital in Partnership with Deakin University

Epworth Geelong Teaching Hospital Design Concept

Waurn Ponds, Geelong

Project Overview
Epworth HealthCare (Epworth) and Deakin University (Deakin) have partnered together to deliver an innovative model of health care teaching and research for Australia which is imbedded in clinical service delivery.

Epworth will own and operate a comprehensive acute and rehabilitation hospital in Geelong on land immediately north of the Deakin University Waurn Ponds campus. This is in close proximity to the Faculty of Health, Medicine, Nursing and Behavioural Sciences and Deakin’s planned Regional Community Health Hub (REACH) building and services.

Victorian Minister for Planning the Hon. Matthew Guy formally approved the planning application to establish the joint Teaching Hospital on January 24 2012. Following consultation with local residents and strong support from Councillors of the City of Greater Geelong, the new 394 bed private hospital will be built on rezoned land that was part of the Marcus Oldham College site. Stage one of the project is due to commence construction later this year.

Why a Teaching and Research Hospital?
The Epworth Geelong Teaching Hospital initiative is based on international models such as the Cleveland Clinic and Mayo Clinic. These leading US not-for-profit hospitals have demonstrated that improved patient outcomes are achieved in a teaching hospital setting.

Research and academic teaching are an increasingly important part of Epworth’s model of operation. Federal Government funding was received to support the development of a dedicated education precinct and ward-based learning areas, which will be included in Stage 1 of the Epworth Geelong Teaching Hospital development. It will incorporate a simulation centre, tutorial rooms, lecture theatre and student lounges to support clinical training and placements at the hospital.
