Post Surgery Care

Your doctor will consult with you to confirm the day of your discharge. Prior to discharge, you will receive instructions regarding your condition and any follow up treatment or appointments you may need. Please check with the nursing staff if you are unsure.

If you have an overnight stay you will be usually be discharged between 9am and 10am unless otherwise authorised by your specialist.

Please make arrangements for your family, friends or carer to collect you at this time. Please check with your nurse before leaving the ward, to collect any x-rays or medication and to confirm if you have any follow-up appointments.

Please ensure that you report to the Admissions and Discharge Office to settle any outstanding monies prior to discharge.

Day patients are usually advised of an approximate discharge time prior to surgery. However your escort should telephone the hospital to obtain a more accurate time later in the day.

For the next day or two after surgery, you should not

  • Drive
  • Drink alcohol
  • Use public transport without an escort (including taxis)
  • Operate machinery
  • Make important personal or business decisions
  • Sign legal documents

The drugs used during your procedure could still be in your system and may affect your movements and ability to think clearly.
