All doctors who work at Epworth HealthCare require formal accreditation via a strict legal process set out in the Epworth Foundation By-Laws. This requires that the doctor provide documentation of medical qualification, specialist training and experience, medical defence insurance and professional references to support their application to practice at Epworth HealthCare.
In addition, each doctor must specify the area of clinical practice in which they wish to be accredited, which is referred to as their clinical scope of practice.
It is also a requirement that every doctor who applies for credentialling at Epworth HealthCare agree to uphold and sign Epworth’s Values and Behaviours.
Each application for credentialling or re-credentialling is considered by the Divisional Medical Advisory Committees at each Epworth HealthCare campus, by the Group Medical Advisory Council and finally ratified by the Board of Management.
Accreditation is valid for up to 5 years, after which each doctor must apply for re-credentialing. Currently, Epworth has over 2700 accredited doctors across a wide variety of specialties and working across all campuses.
The Three Tiers of Accreditation
Epworth HealthCare has a three-tiered accreditation system as follows:
- Tier A: Basic Accreditation
- Tier B: Accreditation for Advanced, Emerging and/or Controversial Procedures
- Tier C: Accreditation for New Procedures.
In addition, Epworth has specific accreditation requirements for the following procedures and specialties:
- Interventional Radiological Procedures
- Invasive Cardiac Procedures. Major Extracorporeal Perfusion
- Use of the Da Vinci Robot
