In August 2009, Epworth HealthCare signed a mutually beneficial, world-first affiliation agreement with the renowned US teaching hospital, Cleveland Clinic.
This affiliation provides Epworth with an opportunity to expose Australian Registrars and Fellows to international training experiences for the benefit of patients and research.
Under this affiliation agreement an extensive fellowship program will be developed and it is envisaged that there will be greater collaboration between the two organisations on:
- Clinical practice
- Research (particularly clinical trials)
- Benchmarking performance on various aspects of operation
- Enhanced education programs including visiting lectureships from key clinical leaders.
Epworth HealthCare and Cleveland Clinic Fellowships
The Fellowship Program allows selected doctors to undertake a Fellowship year at Epworth followed by a fellowship period at Cleveland of between one to two years. While at Cleveland Clinic the Fellow is involved in clinical work, research and education.
Four Fellowship positions under the Epworth HealthCare/Cleveland Clinic affiliation commenced in 2009/10. Two positions are located at Cleveland Clinic in colorectal surgery and breast endocrine. Two positions are at Epworth in interventional cardiology and colorectal surgery. Further fellowships will commence in mid-2011 and mid-2012.
As part of the fellowship program, successful candidates also undertake a Masters degree by research at either Monash University or the University of Melbourne.
