Very often, clinicians (doctors, nurses, allied health professionals) identify the need to investigate clinical practices, treatments or techniques that may dramatically improve the way in which patients are treated, often resulting in reduced mortality (death) or morbidity (complications).
Singularly, or in collaboration, clinicians identify a research project, and funding is then sought through the hospital, or via trusts, foundations, donors and government sources, so that the research can be implemented and offered to patients. These trials are commonly known as 'Investigator-led Research', and provide a high level of research independence.
Investigator-led research can be expensive to run, and they often require funding from many different sources to plan, implement and complete the projects within the stated timeframe.
