Research at Epworth

Research is vital for improving the quality of care to patients, and in many cases, offers patients the opportunity to participate in the trialling of new procedures, pharmaceutical products and devices, to not only improve their own health, but in time provide significant, life saving benefits to many other people in need.

Research provides substantiated proof for deciding how best to treat patients – it removes guesswork and practices that were developed without scientific evidence to support them. It also allows clinical staff to explore critical clinical questions related to patient management, so that more effective treatments can be developed.

Epworth Research Institute was established in 2009 to promote and fund health-related research across Epworth HealthCare.

It is helping researchers discover new and better ways to treat patients, unravel disease pathways and facilitate important breakthroughs.

The Institute is part of Epworth’s commitment to providing world-class patient care, investing in a healthier future by offering patients access to leading-edge research. Over the past 18 months the Institute has led a major change in attitude toward research in the private health sector, and a significant increase in research activity.  An important step toward advancing our goals occurred in 2010, when the National Health and Medical Research Council granted our Institute the status of ‘Approved Research Institute.’

Epworth Research Institute is a public company, limited by guarantee, established to undertake and carry out scientific health research at Epworth, and to improve methods of preventing, diagnosing and treating disease. It has an independent Board of Management with representation from Epworth HealthCare, Deakin, Monash and Melbourne universities.

Research activity at Epworth is supported by the Clinical Institutes, the Victor Smorgon Epworth Education and Research Institute, the Epworth Prostate Cancer Research Centre, the Clinical Trials and Research Centre; and affiliations with the Cleveland Clinic, as well as partnerships with major universities.
