Epworth HealthCare and The University of Melbourne are establishing an endowed Chair of Surgery in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences at The University of Melbourne.

The Chair will be principally located at Epworth Richmond, but will work with other Epworth campuses providing leadership in general surgery and clinical research. The Chair will support the teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students in matters relating to general surgery, particularly in the rapidly advancing area of minimally invasive techniques.

The Chair of Surgery will head an academic Department of Surgery at Epworth. This will form part of the Department of The Royal Melbourne Hospital and Western Hospital Clinical School which is part of The University of Melbourne, and will be responsible through the Clinical School for teaching of medical students and post graduate students.

The appointee to the Chair of Surgery will provide leadership and promote excellence in the discipline of general surgery and/or subspecialties as appropriate, and will develop effective teaching and research programs in this discipline.

As well as education and research, the Chair will provide a major clinical leadership role within Epworth, including key roles on hospital committees involved in policy and planning. The position is responsible for the supervision of major postgraduate research projects, particularly in clinical and translational research. This includes the preparation of research proposal submissions to external bodies and responsibility for the oversight of financial management of grants.
