About us

Epworth Radiation Oncology’s team of experienced radiation oncologists, radiation therapists, physicists and nurses, are passionate about providing the highest quality service in a supportive, patient-centred environment.

The service offers a comprehensive range of contemporary radiation therapy using evidence based techniques, including stereotactic radiation, stereotactic radiosurgery and brachytherapy. Our stereotactic program, which includes treatment for a variety of malignant and benign tumours of the brain and spine, has grown into the busiest in the country.

Innovative treatments

radonc-1.jpgA full range of external beam radiation therapy treatments are offered at Epworth Radiation Oncology, including Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT); Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) and CT scanning equipped with intravenous contrast and respiratory gating. These treatments, combined with our 3D planning computer systems, incorporate the most advanced technology to ensure the highest quality of care is given to all patients.

Driven by an ethos of continuous improvement, Epworth Radiation Oncology has introduced radiation treatment for non-cancer conditions such as trigeminal neuralgia. We're also planning clinical trials to apply stereotactic radiotherapy to functional conditions such as Epilepsy, Parkinson’s Disease and tremors. A number of clinical trials have also been initiated to investigate patient outcomes for metastatic prostate cancer, renal cancer and pancreatic cancer, using novel radiation therapy techniques.

Supported by advanced technology

radonc-2.jpgEpworth Radiation Oncology offers the most advanced radiotherapy equipment in Victoria, including the second generation small footprint Varian Medical Systems TrueBeam STx linear accelerator.

The system has stereotactic radiosurgery capability, allowing for sub-millimetre accuracy for the treatment of many cancerous and non-cancerous conditions. A course of treatment is usually completed in one to five sessions, taking around 30 minutes each.

The TrueBeam complements our other external beam radiation therapy, high and low dose rate brachytherapy services.

Patients can now benefit from the introduction of the motion management system Calypso, installed at both Epworth Freemasons and Epworth Richmond in 2014. Radiofrequency transponders that are surgically placed in tumours are actively tracked. Radiation beams adjust to any patient or tumor movement. This is the first and only Australian installation outside a research agreement and the first and only Victorian installation of the technology. The technology is used internationally for prostate cancer, lung cancer and skin surface movement tracking.
