Epworth HealthCare is one of Australia’s premier not for profit private hospitals, providing acute surgical and medical treatment across a number of specialist fields. With hospitals in the Melbourne suburbs of Richmond (Epworth Richmond, Epworth Rehabilitation Richmond), East Melbourne (Epworth Freemasons), Brighton (Epworth Brighton), Box Hill (Epworth Eastern) and Camberwell (Epworth Camberwell), Epworth is a major player in the contribution of Australia’s private hospitals to the communities they serve. In one recent year alone, procedures performed at private hospitals would have cost the public hospital system more than $4 billion.
Epworth HealthCare and Innovation
Epworth HealthCare is known for its innovation and determination to maintain its position as providing the best and the latest for its surgeons and their patients.
Credentialling of Medical Practitioners
Good clinical governance includes attention to the highest principles of patient care, but also requires the adoption of clinical audit and other measures intended to ensure that medical staff are not only “doing the right thing” but can objectively demonstrate that they are “doing the right thing”. Participation in educational activities, including staff training, and participation in emergency rosters are examples of the kind of commitment to excellence that Epworth expects of its doctors.
In recent years, Epworth:
- Became the first hospital in Australia to introduce minimally invasive surgery using dramatic new robotic equipment. The equipment is now widely used for radical prostatectomies and for some cardiac surgery.
- Opened its radiotherapy centre, managed by the famed Peter MacCallum Cancer Institute. The centre is the first in Australia to be located above ground level, providing a light-filled attractive environment for patients attending for regular treatment.
These and many more initiatives of Epworth are funded by revenues generated by patient throughput and community support through donations. Epworth as a not for profit hospital, receives no direct government support, from either State or Federal Governments. In spite of this, all surplus revenue generated is reinvested in improved patient care.
