The Psychologists at Epworth Rehabilitation work with inpatients, outpatients and people living in the community. Referrals from external sources may be appropriate. The Psychology Department is comprised of both Neuropsychologists and Clinical Psychologists.
The Psychologists are mainly involved with patients who are receiving rehabilitation following work or motor vehicle accidents or who have experienced stroke or other neurological impairment.
Neuropsychologists
- Assess the nature of cognitive, behavioural and emotional changes that may have occurred as a consequence of a head injury, neurological condition (eg. stroke, multiple sclerosis, dementia) or neurosurgical intervention
- Provide strategies to help people manage cognitive deficits and behavioural changes
- Assess the impact of these changes on a person’s lifestyle, relationships and ability to return to work, study or leisure pursuits
- Work with the rehabilitation team to devise appropriate treatment programs
- Provide counselling to address psychological issues.
Clinical Psychologists
- Work with patients experiencing depression, anxiety, post traumatic stress, relationship and sexual difficulties, anger and stress management difficulties, chronic pain, etc.
- Work with patients with complex orthopaedic injuries or chronic pain to address issues of adjustment to injury and to assist them to effectively manage their pain and to increase their activity level.
