Temporary closure of Erin St turning circle

In preparation for commencement of major construction works to the existing Bridge Rd Building planned to commence in May 2010, works are required to upgrade the Erin St turning circle. The removal of existing kerbing, garden beds and the two trees located in the centre of the turning circle is required. This will improve efficiency of the turning circle and provide capacity for Ambulance Victoria vehicles.

The works are planned to begin on Friday 26 March 2010, with tree removal planned for the morning of Saturday 27 March 2010. To ensure staff, patient and visitor safety the turning circle will be closed during this time. Furthermore, concreting works are planned to occur on the morning of Monday 29 March 2010. The turning circle will be closed during this period. An Epworth staff member and a member of the construction team will be available to assist patients, staff and visitors to provide directions to alternative entry points.

The works are expected to be largely completed by 1 April 2010, with additional incidental works required over the following two weeks.

Buried within the turning circle is a ‘time capsule’ which was placed there in 1987 to be opened in 2020 to mark the 100 year anniversary of Epworth HealthCare. The time capsule will be relocated as part of the works, but will not be opened.

There is also a plaque, laid in 2000 for the International Year of Volunteers. This acknowledges the many hundreds of generous volunteers who have helped Epworth provide an excellent and caring service. A new tree will be planted and the plaque re-laid in a ceremony with volunteers in May 2010.

Once completed, the works will provide four designated Ambulance Victoria vehicle spaces and three designated emergency spaces for medical practitioners. Every endeavour will be made to minimise disruption during the completion of these works. For further information please contact epworthredevelopment@epworth.org.au
