Day Surgery

On the day of admission you need to present to the reception area of Epworth Richmond, 2nd floor, 89 Bridge Road and from there you will be directed to Epworth Richmond Day Procedures Unit or accompanied to Level 3 Leigh Place, Day Procedure Unit.

Procedure
After admission you will meet and be interviewed by one of our nurses, who will be looking after you during your stay. The nurse will explain ward layout, services available and show you to your recliner.

Preparing for your admission
To help us prepare for your admission we require your admission details (form), prior to the day of your admission. This form should be sent to our Patient Administration Office at 89 Bridge Road Richmond 3121 or faxed through to the Booking Office on +613 9428 7692.

On the day of admission please bring in your health insurance documents and Medicare card.

Hospital accounts must be settled on the day of admission. It is advisable that you contact your health fund or call our Patient Administration Office on (03) 9426 6662 to check your level of cover and any likely out of pocket expenses. Your payment can be made by cash, cheque or credit card.

All patients (with the exception of IVF and Endoscopy) are requested to telephone the unit on +613 9426 6661 between 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., the day prior to their procedure for admission time and pre-operative information.

Before surgery

  • Please ensure you have someone to collect and drive you home after the procedure. You will not be permitted to leave alone or use public transport
  • You should also arrange to have someone stay with you the day and night of the surgery

Morning surgery: Do not eat or drink after 12 midnight the night before (including chewing gum)

Afternoon surgery: Have a light breakfast (e.g. tea and toast or fruit) before 7 a.m. Do not eat or drink after this time (including chewing gum)

  • Take all medications (regardless of fasting) with a small amount of water at the usual times. Bring all medication with you
  • If you are diabetic do not take insulin or diabetic medication unless instructed by your doctor to do so.
  • Bring all medication including insulin with you
  • Consult your doctor prior to surgery if taking Aspirin, anti-inflammatories or diuretics (fluid tablets), to determine if you are to cease or alter medication regimes
  • Notify us, if you have any special dietary requirements
  • Inform your surgeon if there is any untoward change in your health leading up to your procedure (e.g. cold or fever)
  • Bring in relevant x-rays and referrals
  • Do not bring in valuables or large sums of money, as the hospital will not accept responsibility for loss
  • Do not wear make-up, nail polish or jewellery
  • Wear loose and comfortable clothing
  • Bring in reading material if desired
  • A family member of carer may stay with you. It is not a suitable environment for visiting children
  • Do not smoke for at least 24 hours before your procedure
  • Nursing staff will advise you of an approximate discharge time (usually a period between 1 – 6 hours)
