For the next day or two after any surgery, you should not

  • Drive
  • Drink alcohol
  • Use public transport without an escort (including taxis)
  • Operate machinery
  • Make important personal or business decisions
  • Sign legal documents

The drugs used during your procedure could still be in your system and may affect your movements and ability to think clearly.

Overnight patients

If you have an overnight stay you will be usually be discharged between 9am and 10am unless otherwise authorised by your specialist. Your doctor will consult with you to confirm the day of your discharge. Prior to discharge, you will receive instructions regarding your condition and any follow up treatment or appointments you may need. Please check with the nursing staff if you are unsure.

Please make arrangements for your family, friends or carer to collect you at this time. Please check with your nurse before leaving the ward, to collect any x-rays or medication and to confirm if you have any follow-up appointments.

Please ensure that you report to the Admissions and Discharge Office to settle any outstanding monies prior to discharge. Please do not hesitate to contact us at any time either before or after your admission if you have any queries.

Our Emergency Department is open 24 hours a day should you require any urgent assistance, although we would encourage you first to contact your doctor.

Day surgery patients

Day patients are usually advised of an approximate discharge time prior to surgery. However your escort should telephone the hospital to obtain a more accurate time later in the day.

You will be taken to the Recovery Room where you will stay until you are ready to return to the recliner area. Light refreshments will be provided before you are discharged.

The Day Surgery Unit will organise a follow up appointment for you, and any discharge medications specified by your doctor. A special discharge information sheet will also be given to you before you leave.
