The General Surgical unit is a 44 Bed Unit, hosting a variety of Surgical Disciplines including:
- Abdominal
- Colorectal
- Upper Gastrointestinal
- Urology
- Gynaecology
- Hepatobiliary
- Ear Nose & Throat (ENT)
- Obesity surgery
The unit is made up of both single and shared rooms; your allocation depends on availability at the time of admission.
Doctors
Accredited Consultant, Surgeons and Physicians with expertise in various subspecialties of general surgery and medicine admit elective patients to 7ES. Majority of these Doctors work in the public teaching hospitals. There is a 24hour on call roster to treat any patient presenting urgently in the Emergency Department. If patients are admitted via Epworth Richmond Emergency Department they may choose to be treated by their Surgeon of choice or by the Surgeon on call.
On 7ES the nursing team is made up of:
- Team Leaders
- Clinical Care Co-ordinators
- Clinical Nurse Specialist’s
- Clinical Resource Nurse
- Registered Nurses
The Team Leader is responsible for managing the nursing staff and the day to day running of the ward which involves:
- Allocation of patient admissions and customer service
- Overseeing of in-patient care by liasing and communicating with nursing staff and the Multidisciplinary team
- The management of financial and administrative aspects of the unit
Any issues or concerns pertaining to your hospital stay that cannot be addressed by the nursing staff may be directed to the Team Leader.
The Clinical Resource Nurse is responsible for the support and education of all nursing staff that involves:
- All in-service education
- Provision of professional development and clinical competency
- Integration of new graduate nurses and students into the health care team
During your stay on 7ES you will be cared for by nursing staff, the nurse to patient ratio varies according to patient need. The staff on 7ES is committed to providing:

The Epworth HealthCare Model of Care is patient focused and facilitates coordinated care from before your admission through to after your discharge. This model has been demonstrated to deliver the best level of patient care. Epworth Richmond's doctors and nurses are key players in this Model of Care.
The nursing staff work three rotating shifts ie morning, afternoon and night duty. At the beginning and end of each shift there is a hand over period where patient progress is discussed. Epworth HealthCare has a strong Bank and Nurse Resource Team focus that is utilised throughout the hospital. 7ES have a strong core of Permanent staff and occasionally utilise this resource.
