Core-valve trial gains momentum

2 June 2014

Epworth Interventional Cardiologist Tony Walton has performed the highest number of procedures in Australia as part of an international trial to treat severe aortic stenosis using Medtronic’s Core Valve System.

Performed in the Catheter Laboratory, this cardiac procedure is designed to enable replacement of a diseased aortic valve without open heart surgery or surgical removal of the native valve. The trial is currently taking place in eight Australian hospitals and in Melbourne at Epworth, The Alfred, Monash and St Vincent’s. Epworth has increased its lead role among Australia’s private hospitals performing this procedure with 100 of the 800  procedures performed in Australia taking place in the Richmond Catheter Lab.

Approximately 7500 patients have taken part in the trial. While the Core Valve technology wasgranted FDA approval in the US earlier this year, it does not yet have TGA approval in Australia.
