Postgraduate Course in Orthopaedic Nursing

Epworth Richmond conducts a Postgraduate Certificate in Orthopaedic Nursing Program in conjunction with Australian Catholic University as part of Master of Health Science (Clinical Practice).


Two clinical subjects (Speciality Practice 1 and 2) are conducted at Epworth Richmond.


The theoretical component (Foundations of Specialty Practice and Dimensions of Specialty Practice) is conducted online via Australian Catholic University.


Course Content


  • Classes are held at Epworth Richmond for one half day per week in each Semester.
  • Semester runs from February to November.
  • Clinical subjects are free to Epworth HealthCare staff.
  • External staff are welcome to apply to undertake the clinical subjects at Epworth Richmond, and will be charged a nominal fee.


Course Outline


The clinical subjects aim to prepare students for specialty practice in Orthopaedic Nursing. The key topics include:


  • Anatomy and physiology of the musculoskeletal system
  • Assessment of musculoskeletal and neurovascular system
  • Interpretation and implementation of diagnostic studies in planning orthopaedic clinical care
  • Infections of the musculoskeletal system
  • Neoplasms of the musculoskeletal system
  • Pre, intra, post operative review of orthopaedic patient
  • Immobilisation techniques and nursing considerations.
