Medical Specialist Appointments and Credentialling Process

All doctors who work at Epworth HealthCare require appointment via a formal process (as indicated in the By-Laws)  and are required to provide documentation of medical qualification, specialist training and experience, medical defence insurance and professional references to support their application to practice at Epworth HealthCare. In addition, each doctor must specify the area of clinical practice in which they wish to be accredited, which is referred to as their clinical scope of practice.

At Epworth HealthCare your scope of practice will depend on which Tier A-C you are appointed under.

Accreditation Type

Tier A

Basic accreditation for a given specialty, covering all aspects of practice other than those covered by Tiers B and C. The applicant has satisfied the appropriate Fellowship requirements of the relevant medical college or equivalent.

Tier B

Applies to a selected range of advanced or emerging interventions for which additional evidence of suitable training or experience is required.

Tier C

New interventions that have not previously been performed at Epworth.

If you seek to introduce new procedures or clinical practices (or significant revisions of existing procedures and practices) you must provide additional specified information before you can be accredited to perform them. If you wish to practice under a scope that you have not been accredited for or introduce a new procedure or clinical practice (or a significant revision of an existing procedure or clinical practice) you will need to discuss this with your medical director and formally apply. Details of scope of practice at Epworth by specialty is available on the Intranet.

Doctors In Training - Interns, HMOs, Registrar and Fellows

Epworth supports Junior Doctor Training programs through a co-ordinator and administrative assistant.

In the last two years, Epworth has increased its registrar and fellowship program from 20 to close to 50 positions with eight of these additional positions funded through the Australian Government’s Expanded Setting Program. The Commonwealth has established a Specialist Training Program and is funding an increasing number of registrar positions in the private hospital setting. Epworth is participating in this program and the demand for places will significantly increase over the next few years.

Intern rotations are minimal however applications for expansion of numbers of interns are underway. Two intern rotations have been established at Epworth Eastern under the supervision of the General Surgery and General Medicine registrars and consultants.

The DIT Co-ordinator oversees the administrative functions of Registrars and Fellows. This involves:

  • Liaising with Austin Health, Eastern Health, Southern Health, the Royal Women’s, Mercy Hospital and Epworth HealthCare departments to ensure interns, HMOs, Registrars and Fellows on rotation to Epworth HealthCare have a smooth transition.

  • Coordinate sponsorship and visa applications for oncoming overseas medical staff, seeking advice from the Department of Immigration & Citizenship

  • Assist Registrars and Fellows with registration with the Australian Medical Board (AHPRA).

  • Organise orientation for new Registrars & Fellows to Epworth Healthcare.

Clinical Institutes

The Clinical Institute team is integral in the organisation of departmental meetings, seminars, conferences, symposium and audits.

Each Institute combines all the specialities associated with a specific disease or organ system under an Executive Committee's leadership across all Epworth facilities. The Institutes promote clinical audit, peer review and teaching and clinical collaboration and encourage innovation and improve patient care.

By linking particular craft groups under Clinical Institutes we create synergy amongst clinicians with similar clinical research and teaching interests.

There are 11 Clinical Institutes supporting over 50 Registrar and Fellow positions, and providing the basis for clinical audit programs.

Institutes host scientific symposia, and these continue to attract national and international speakers to Epworth. The Clinical Institute Coordinators are located at Medical Services and provide a high level of secretariat support to the Clinical Institutes.
