Test information

Transthoracic echocardiogram (45 - 60 minutes)

This test uses ultrasound to take images of your heart at rest. No special preparation is required for this test. Read more (PDF, 44KB)

Treadmill stress echocardiogram (allow 1 - 1½ hours)

For this test please come dressed in comfortable clothing and shoes. This test includes an echocardiogram and exercise stress test. Ultrasound images will be taken before and after exercise.

Some medications must be stopped 48 hours prior to this test, please check with your referring doctor. Read more (PDF, 44KB)

Dobutamine stress echocardiogram (allow 1 - 1½ hours)

In this test, your heart rate will be increased using medications rather than exercise. You are required to fast for one hour before the test and some medications must be stopped 48 hours before the test, please check with your referring doctor. Read more (PDF, 45KB)

Transoesophageal echocardiogram (TOE)

This test requires you to be admitted to our hospital for a day. Fasting is required for at least six hours prior to this procedure. Before the procedure, you will be given light sedation and an ultrasound transducer will be passed via your mouth down the oesophagus from where images of your heart will be obtained. It is essential that you have someone to drive you home after this procedure. Read more (PDF, 55KB)

Treadmill exercise stress ECG test (30 minutes)

This test incorporates an electrocardiogram and exercise stress test. Some medications must be stopped 48 hours prior to the test, please check with your referring doctor. Comfortable clothing and shoes suitable for exercise must be worn. Read more (PDF, 44KB)

Tilt table test (45 - 60 minutes)

Avoid eating a heavy meal before this test, but you may drink clear fluids. It is essential that you have someone to escort you home after this test.

This test involves lying on a table which is tilted to a standing position. Your blood pressure and heart rate will be measured throughout the test and you may be given some medication. It is important to check with your doctor if any medications need to be ceased before having this test. You must not eat a heavy meal prior to the test but you may drink clear fluids. It is essential that you have someone to escort you home after this test.

Holter monitoring, blood pressure monitoring and event monitoring (Allow 20 minutes)

For holter monitoring a monitor will be attached to your chest and waist, to record your heartbeat for 24 hours, or one week in the case of event monitoring. Blood pressure monitoring is recorded for 24 hours, using a cuff attached to your arm. You will still be able to carry out normal activities such as working and shopping. For all monitors, you will be provided with clear instructions by the technologist when you are fitted with the monitor.
