The Julia Argyrou Endometriosis Centre at Epworth hosts an endometriosis support group to exchange ideas, coping strategies and current treatment information, with access to the expertise of health professionals. A referral from your GP, a Specialist or other health professional is required to access most Epworth services and some can be called directly by the patient including our Allied Health Clinic, GP Clinic, Men’s Health Clinic and Jean Hailes at Epworth Freemasons as well as our Breast Services, Epworth Sports and Exercise Medicine Group and Epworth HealthCheck.

Gynaecology at Epworth Freemasons

The Epworth Freemasons Gynaecology department has visiting specialists including gynae-oncology surgeons, obstetricians, gynaecologists and fertility and medical specialists.

Features of the Women's Health Unit include:

  • Clinical Nurse Specialist
  • Coffee and tea making facilities in ward kitchen
  • Experienced regular staff trained in gynaecological care and midwifery
  • Fridges and Queen Size beds in some rooms
  • Inpatient Chemotherapy & Radiotherapy
  • Nursery
  • Pre-admission Facilitator (Registered Nurse)

Patient Needs

Epworth Freemasons is equipped with a 33-bed ward, catering for patients with a variety of gynaecological conditions. Unit staff members are supported by a full-time clinical educator and regular in-service education is provided. Surgical cases include:

  • Extensive surgery for gynaecological cancers
  • Hysterectomies
  • Major laparoscopic work

This unit is supported by experienced operating theatre staff and specialised ward nurses. In addition, a highly experienced clinical nurse specialist in gynaecological oncology is available to provide emotional and physical support as well as practical information prior to surgery, as well as during hospitalisation and convalescence.

Visitors

Visiting hours are:

  • 11:00am-8:00pm (for general patients)
  • 2:30pm - 4:00pm and 6:30-8:00pm for Maternity patients

No visiting:

  • 1:30-2:30pm (rest time)

More information

Most doctors provide written information about relevant procedures, including a patient pathway brochure produced by the ward. The pathway outlines the expected day-to-day procedures and progress, as well as discharge advice.

Further general information is available on the ward, while more specific information can be obtained from the gynaecological clinical nurse specialist.

Gynaecological Oncology

A Brachytherapy Unit, for radiological treatment of gynaecological cancers, is available at Epworth Freemasons. A full range of surgery is also offered, including:

  • Cone biopsy
  • D & C
  • Hysterectomy
  • Hysteroscopy
  • Laparoscopy
  • Vaginal and ovarian surgery
  • Vulval

Prevention screening programs (pap smears) are available to all women. Early detection and treatment may help prevent further development and progression of problems. A Colposcopy and Laser Clinic is also available for the management of abnormal smears.

Endometriosis Support Group

The Endometriosis Support Group was created in response to a need expressed by patients of the Epworth Women's Health Unit.
