A referral from your GP, a Specialist or other health professional is required to access most Epworth services and some can be called directly by the patient including our Allied Health Clinic, GP Clinic, Men’s Health Clinic and Jean Hailes at Epworth Freemasons as well as our Breast Services, Epworth Sports and Exercise Medicine Group and Epworth HealthCheck.

General medicine at Epworth Eastern

This 21 bed multi-disciplinary unit uses an integrated team approach to ensure a high quality of patient care for acute and chronic medical patients across a range of specialties including:

  • Acute Medical
  • Clinical pharmacology
  • Endocrinology
  • Gerontology
  • Haematology
  • Infectious disease
  • Nephrology (renal)
  • Respiratory Medicine
  • Rheumatology

A comprehensive team of professionals with expertise in supporting patients and their families with complex medical conditions will support the ward, including:

  • Nurse Unit Manager
  • Associate Nurse Ward Managers
  • Registered and enrolled Nurses
  • Clinical Nurse Educators
  • Clinical Nurse Specialists
  • Pastoral Care
  • Patient Services Assistants

With additional support and expertise from our experienced Allied Health team including:

  • Discharge and Aged Care Coordinator
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Physiotherapy

The Medical Ward is supported 24 hours a day by the Epworth Eastern Intensive Care Ward (ICU) and hospital coordinator team.

General medicine at Epworth Freemasons

The Medical Unit (Ward Ground East) at Epworth Freemasons is located on the ground floor and has 29 acute beds. patients are admitted either directly to the unit or via the emergency department at Epworth Richmond.

The Medical Unit has an integrated team approach to ensure the highest quality of patient care across a range of specialties including:

  • Acute Medical
  • Cardiology
  • Endocrinology
  • Gastroenterology
  • Geriatric Medicine
  • Haematology
  • Nephrology
  • Neurology
  • Respiratory Medicine

The unit is staffed by a team of more than 30, including:

  • Allied Health Team
  • Associate Nurse Unit Managers
  • Clinical Nurse Facilitator
  • Clinical Nurse Specialists
  • Discharge and Aged Care Coordinator
  • Enrolled nurses
  • Nurse Unit Manager
  • Occupational Therapy

Patients often have complex care needs and require extensive discharge planning that may include increased home services, referral to rehabilitation or ACAS assessment for residential care placement.

We encourage patients to be involved in their care with the use of Care Boards and our nursing staff will ensure comfort and well-being by assessing your needs at a minimum of every hour.

Epworth Freemasons supports education and training for junior doctors, nurses and allied health staff. Our doctors may have medical students and/or registrars working with them who may be involved in your care. There are also undergraduate nursing and allied health students on the ward.

The Medical Unit is backed by 24 hour medical emergency assistance from Epworth Freemasons' Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
