Vision and mission
Since 2010, the Unit has operated as a medical research precinct, supporting doctors and allied health professionals in higher level degrees, research projects and clinical trial collaborations. The Unit aims to provide insight on best practice in rehabilitation management through the conduction of innovative clinical research.
Key activities
The EMReM unit focuses on the investigation of outcomes following injuries requiring rehabilitation (such as traumatic brain injury, stroke or orthopaedic injury).
Research areas include:
- Assessing the impact of tailored treatment for concussion in a designated Epworth clinic
- Measuring the nature of sleep of patients in the acute stages following brain injury
- Monitoring the long-term outcomes of patients post head injury and stroke
The Unit’s clinical projects aim to translate evidence-based findings into our rehabilitation practice.
Epworth’s Olfactory Impairment Clinic was the first rehabilitation facility within Australia to offer this type of specialised, diagnostic clinic and was developed as the result of a recently completed PhD project by Dr Melanie Drummond, which found a much higher incidence of loss of sense of smell after brain injury than previously reported.
