About
Dr Karen Gwee is an adult psychiatrist with a special interest in eating disorders. She currently holds a public appointment at Austin Health, as the Clinical Lead Consultant in Eating Disorders and is the consultant psychiatrist at the Body Image and Eating Disorders Treatment and Recovery Service (BETRS). She consults privately at Epworth Camberwell and is on the Epworth Mental Health Medical Advisory Committee. Dr Gwee is an accredited supervisor of psychiatric registrars and is involved in medical student teaching. Dr Gwee completed a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery and Master of Psychological Medicine at The University of Melbourne. She obtained her Fellowship in adult psychiatry through the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists and completed a certificate in psychotherapy, specialising in cognitive behavioural therapy.
Dr Gwee provides care across the full spectrum of adult psychiatry with particularly interests in caring for those with mood disorders, anxiety disorders, women’s mental health and eating disorders. She has a biopsychosocial approach, incorporating pharmacological interventions, as well as psychotherapeutic interventions, such as cognitive behavioural therapy, eye movement desensitisation reprocessing therapy (EMDR) and schema therapy. She individualises the treatment of each patient according to their needs and is keen to involve patient supports.
