Epworth Eastern Oncology provides personalised on-site service for patients requiring diagnostic services, chemotherapy, immunotherapies, radiotherapy or palliative care. The service offers a 50-bed inpatient unit and an 18-chair Day Oncology Unit.

    The Day Oncology unit at Epworth Eastern is fitted with 18 treatment chairs.

    Our day oncology department administers chemotherapy but also offers other therapies. The highly skilled nursing team welcomes any treatments or infusions that can safely be given in a day-care setting, including IVF infusions, iron infusions, Crohn's Disease and Multiple Sclerosis infusions.

  • Patient needs

    Epworth Eastern is equipped with a 50-bed ward catering for patients with a variety of oncology conditions. Unit staff members are supported by a full-time clinical educator and regular in-service education is provided.

    Experienced operating theatre staff and specialised ward nurses support this unit. Experienced Clinical Nurse Specialists are available to provide emotional and physical support as well as practical information prior to surgery and during hospitalisation and recuperation.

    Note: Car parking at Epworth Eastern is discounted for Day Oncology patients. Collect a ticket when you enter the car park and bring it to your appointment to receive a voucher. Visitor parking is available on-site, close to the main entrance.

  • Wellness zone

    Epworth Eastern's Wellness Zone will offer a variety of evidence-based therapies and programs for oncology patients located on level 10 of the East Wing Tower.

    Our Wellness Zone embraces a patient-focused model of care in which family and friends of patients are welcome.

    Our programs are designed to provide information to our patients, support and strategies to help during and after treatment.

    We have collaborated closely with the rehabilitation and mental health team at Epworth. In addition to providing allied health services, such as exercise physiology and urodynamic assessments, we have also reconnected with some of our existing services such as the wig salon.

  • Wig salon

    The Wig Salon is a free wig consultation service staffed by trained volunteers and provides a supportive and friendly salon-style environment for cancer patients.

    With the help of our friendly and supportive volunteers, the Wig Salon offers complimentary, private, compassionate consultation services to cancer patients during their treatment.

    A personalised product bag will be provided for each patient, containing their choice of wig, silk scarf, bamboo night cap, turban, hairnet, baby shampoo and wig brush.

  • FREE Lung Cancer Screening

    Could you be at risk of developing lung cancer?

    Please read the following questions:

    • Are you a smoker or a recent former smoker?
    • Are you aged 55-80?
    • Are you in good general health?

    f you have answered 'yes' to all three questions, you may be eligible to participate in an international research NHMRC-funded study (APP 1099154) conducted at Epworth Eastern.

    Eligible patients will have a low-dose chest CT scan and lung function test to see if it can detect early lung cancer.

    Lung cancer

    The Eastern Thoracic Oncology Service (EThOS) is a team of physicians and surgeons specialising in the assessment and management of patients with suspected or proven lung cancer.

    We use the latest technology in terms of diagnosis and assessment.

    Advanced radiation planning including:

    • PET-CT
    • Endo bronchial ultrasound (EBUS)
    • Laser bronchoscopy
    • PET scanning
    • Stereotactic radiation therapy
    • Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS)
    • We offer specialist consultation, assessment, investigation and multidisciplinary discussion regarding the best treatment options for your patient.

    EThOS physicians and surgeons work across public and private health services and offer timely investigation and treatment according to the patient's preference.

    GPs will receive immediate feedback from the primary physician or surgeon after all Multidisciplinary Team Discussions.

    Your patients will have access to the full range of supportive care offered by EThOS.

    Which patients should you refer to EThOS?

    Patients suitable for urgent referral include all patients with suspected lung cancer, including those with:

    • Lung mass on CXR/CT
    • Mediastinal lymphadenopathy
    • Persistent haemoptysis
    • Pleural effusion
    • Suspected metastatic disease
    • Accessing EThOS

    The EThOS service can be accessed by direct referral to any of the above physicians or surgeons or by contacting 0407 849 579.

    Completing the EThOS referral form and faxing it to 03 8807 7489.

    Phone or fax referrals will be assessed by our dedicated EThOS nurse and triaged to the most appropriate team member for immediate consultation and assessment.

  • Melanoma Clinic

    Epworth Eastern's Eastern Melanoma Clinic is located at Box Hill, offering patients a holistic approach to managing suspected and diagnosed cases of melanoma.

    The clinic offers a team of highly skilled specialists, plastic and reconstructive surgeons and medical oncologists.

    Specialists work closely together to manage a patient's case for both surgical and oncology treatments, ensuring patient GPs and dermatologists are kept well informed.

    Patients also have access to academic research and clinical trials, with suitable patients provided the opportunity to access state-of-the-art facilities at Epworth Eastern.

    Pensioners will not be charged any out-of-pocket fees, while other insured patients will have access to extremely competitive out-of-pocket fees.

    Peter Mac Box Hill is a satellite campus of the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. Their mission is to provide excellence in cancer care for people in the eastern suburbs. They have a multi-faceted approach to treatment, working closely with colleagues at Epworth Eastern, Box Hill Hospital and with other physicians and surgeons in the area.

The Epworth Freemasons Day Oncology Unit was established in 1991 and has grown into a comprehensive, modern facility treating approximately 600 patients per month. The unit offers dedicated, professional care within the newly built Grey Street Building. This beautiful, purpose-built space is a sanctuary for patients undergoing cancer treatment, with 3 new Hillrom beds and 17 Recliner chairs.

    Patients are encouraged to attend our pre-admission clinic with their support person, as comprehensive education and advice on treatment related side-effects and their management is given. Nursing staff work in close consultation with doctors to ensure patients receive the highest quality care, support and education.

    Epworth Freemasons also provides support and counselling from experienced oncology personnel for patients and families struggling with a cancer diagnosis. There are many cancer support groups available for those interested in sharing their experiences with others.

    The 'Look Good Feel Better' program is designed for newly diagnosed women who may be feeling distress over physical changes occurring to their bodies during chemotherapy or radiotherapy. The programs aim is to give women the confidence to look great during their treatment by applying make-up and receiving helpful beauty tips.

    From initial diagnosis through to cure, relapse or end of life, patient needs change. As a result, so will the level of physical and emotional care required. Epworth Freemasons staff are committed to ensuring upmost quality of life and provide patients and families comprehensive discharge planning and access to allied health professionals such as physiotherapists, dietitians, local council assistance and palliative care.

    This unit is supported by experienced operating theatre staff and specialised ward nurses. A highly experienced Clinical Nurse Specialist in Gynaecological Oncology is also available to provide emotional and physical support as well as practical information prior to surgery and during hospitalisation and recuperation.

    The inpatient oncology unit is in close proximity to our Day Oncology unit, providing patients with the care then need as an inpatient or outpatient.

  • Wig salon

    Epworth Geelong supports cancer patients through more than just clinical care. Patients experiencing hair loss as a result of cancer treatment can access our wig salon, located on site. At the wig salon, patients can select from a variety of quality wigs and scarves and will also receive a turban or night cap.

    A professional hairdresser will also help fit and style your new products.

    The oncology ward at Epworth Richmond is located on Level 4 Gray Wing.

    As well as our specialists and caring nurses, you will be supported by a team of professions as required including care coordinators, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, dietetics, pharmacists and social workers.

    Our pastoral care team is available to visit. Pastoral carers offer a calm, respectful, non-judgmental listening presence. We can support you in times of illness, change, uncertainty, loss and grief, and encourage you to find hope, strength and courage.
