Rheumatologists mainly deal with problems involving the joints and the allied conditions of connective tissue, using tools such as laboratory tests and X-rays to diagnose patient problems.
A substantial range of conditions are diagnosed or managed with the help of our rheumatologists, including:
- Behçet's syndrome
- Buerger's disease (thromboangiitis obliterans).
- Gout and Psuedogout
- Henoch-Schönlein purpura
- Kawasaki's disease (mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome)
- Lupus erythematosus
- Polyarteritis nodosa
- Polymyalgia rheumatica
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Scleroderma (systemic sclerosis)
- Septic arthritis
- Serum sickness
- Sjögren's syndrome
- Wegener's granulomatosis
Many of these conditions are chronic rather than acute, and in addition to healing, or focus is on returning quality of life to sufferers, many of whom have to deal with a considerable burden of pain.
Rheumatology services are offered at Epworth Eastern, Epworth Freemasons and Epworth Richmond.
