Epworth Geelong

Epworth Geelong is a training hospital, through a partnership with Deakin University and Epworth. Together, we have developed a model of care, where teaching and research are embedded in clinical service delivery.

Epworth Deakin Centre for Clinical Nursing Research

The Epworth Deakin Centre for Clinical Nursing Research is a joint initiative between Deakin University and Epworth to conduct clinical research and access to clinical research training.

The Centre is led by Professor Anastasia Hutchinson, providing academic and professional leadership to staff and students of Epworth and Deakin University.

At Epworth, nursing staff are encouraged and supported by the Centre to be actively involved in nursing research programs, with opportunities for multidisciplinary, clinically-focused, research participation and training. The objective is to increase research capacity and build expertise in methodologies related to health service evaluation.

Monash University

Monash Epworth Rehabilitation Research Centre

Monash Epworth Rehabilitation Research Centre is a collaboration between the Epworth and the School of Psychology and Psychiatry at Monash University, located primarily at Epworth Richmond.

One of the aims of the Centre is to translate research outcomes into more effective rehabilitation for people with traumatic brain injury (TBI), to improve their quality of life and re-engagement in the community.

Epworth Victor Smorgon Chair of Rehabilitation Medicine

Professor John Olver was appointed as the Victor Smorgon Chair of Rehabilitation Medicine at Monash University, comprising of dual relationships with Epworth and Monash University incorporating Epworth Rehabilitation and the Monash Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Services.

As the Chair, Professor Olver works in partnership with Steve Wesselingh, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences at Monash University, to jointly set the agenda for the development of new directions in rehabilitation policy, services and research.

Epworth Monash Rehabilitation Medicine Unit

This unit undertakes and delivers world-class rehabilitation research, to help patients recovering from injury or illness to improve their quality of life, physical mobility and cognitive development.

Through its multidisciplinary research team, the unit bridges the spectrum of acute illness or injury with long term follow-up of rehabilitation research participants. By moving outside of the traditional silos of research and clinical care, patients and research participants benefit from a whole of person rehabilitation approach.

The University of Melbourne

Epworth Victor Smorgon Chair of Surgery and Professor of Surgery

Epworth and the University of Melbourne have established an endowed Chair of Surgery in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences at the University of Melbourne.

Professor Richard de Steiger

Professor Richard de Steiger has been appointed Victor Smorgon Chair of Surgery and Professor of Surgery, by Epworth and the University of Melbourne. A renowned orthopaedic surgeon and Chair of the Musculoskeletal Clinical Institute, Professor de Steiger has a special interest in hip and knee joint replacement, and the management of adult hip disorders.

Professor de Steiger's role is multifaceted, with numerous responsibilities, including:

• defining the objectives and goals for surgical services
• ensuring all surgical service commitments to patient care
• fostering excellence in research
• maintaining teaching and research
• professional activities and policy development related to surgery.

He also holds the position of Deputy Director of the Australian Orthopaedic Association - National Joint Replacement Registry and he is a principal investigator with the Victorian Orthopaedic Trauma Outcomes Registry.

A/Prof Gavin Williams

A/Prof Gavin Williams is the inaugural Associate Professor of Physiotherapy Rehabilitation, a joint position between Epworth and the University of Melbourne. A/Prof Gavin Williams is a world leader in the assessment and treatment of gait disorders in traumatic brain injury and his assessment tool, the High-level Mobility Assessment Tool (HiMAT), is used all around the world and it has been translated into 10 different languages. His related intervention program, the ‘Running Group’, has also been adopted internationally.

His research expertise and interests include:

• assessment and management of neurological gait disorders, including brain injury, stroke and cerebral palsy
• development of outcome measures for rehabilitation
• focal spasticity
• treatment of high-level mobility including running and return to sport
• strength and power training for people with neurological disorders
• knowledge translation and implementation programs.

A/Prof Gavin Williams supports several of PhD students in these areas, and in 2017 established a research fund - PRoSpER (Physiotherapy ReSearch Epworth Rehabilitation) – to support clinical research in physiotherapy at Epworth.
