Epworth Scholarship Program brings alliance to life

21 July 2017

A group of Epworth HealthCare  clinicians were privileged to be the first staff to visit Northwell Health facilities in the US this year as part of an innovative strategic alliance agreement between the two leading health care organisations.

Northwell’s corporate university, the Center for Learning and Innovation, recently hosted six Epworth representatives on a two-week immersion experience, exposing them to a wide array of best practices from New York’s largest health care system, including the Patient Safety Institute, as well as a tour of the Center for Emergency Medical Services and innovative TeleHealth operation.

Simon Benedict, Epworth human resources director the leader of the inaugural immersion group said “This was an incredible opportunity for Epworth staff. Northwell shared aspects of their best practices in patient care which will be translated back to Epworth, ultimately improving the care of our patients.

“Northwell were incredibly hospitable and forthcoming in sharing knowledge; it was a truly collaborative experience and our team shared Epworth best practices in return,” he added.

Kevin McGeachy, senior vice president of strategic alliances at Northwell Health reported that initial talks are under way for Northwell employees to possible visit Epworth possible later this year or in 2018.

The study tour was possible as a part of the innovative donor funded staff Scholarship Program. Staff can apply for up to $10,000 support to complete projects or activities that support their professional development. In 2017 more than 120 scholarships were awarded, valued at just over $700,000 in total.

Epworth is justifiably proud of the scholarship program. There is a long history and strong culture of philanthropy at Epworth and the scholarship program is funded in its entirety, with thanks to private donors and corporate sponsors of the Epworth Medical Foundation.

Scott Bulger, Executive Director of the Epworth Medical Foundation said the program is an exceptional one industry-wide, and is a distinctive way that Epworth invests in people, support their career goals and aspirations.

“Most of our donors have chosen to create these scholarships as a way to show their great appreciation for the outstanding care that they or their loved ones have received at Epworth. Many are thrilled to meet the recipients of their scholarships, and to celebrate the wonderful care that Epworth staff provide on a daily basis.

“Every scholarship is used to support the professional development activities of our people. This could include returning to study, attending an international conference, undertaking further training or visiting another institution to learn new techniques,” Mr Bulger added.

The Northwell exchange scholarships are part of a broader plan between the two organisations to share information and learn from each other. Northwell’s culture of employee education as well as the health system’s pain management, home care, rehabilitation services and radiation oncology programs are among the areas that Epworth employees evaluated and will consider for Epworth.

Clinical Nurse Consultant Caroline McLoughlin said the support she received from all Northwell staff over the two week period was exceptionally knowledgeable and her experience very worthwhile in ensuring ongoing success of the Epworth Acute Pain Service.
