Completion of the Introduction to Specialty Practice program provides a priority pathway to undertake postgraduate study in midwifery and the opportunity to apply for a targeted Epworth scholarship.

Brookes Academy - Epworth HealthCare

This introductory program is for registered nurses to extend their professional skills and knowledge within the speciality of midwifery, providing care for women and babies in the post-natal period.

Entry requirements

  • Current registered nurses with AHPRA.
  • Minimum two years acute clinical nursing experience.

Duration

  • One intake commencing August each year
  • 6-month program
  • Permanent contract, minimum 0.6 to full time.

Program structure

  • Delivered in a blended learning method, with a combination of self-directed online learning and classroom-based learning
  • Three-day theory and orientation
  • Lactation Consultant Day

Learning content

The ISP program consists of three full-day study sessions covering the following as well as online modules:

  • Day 1: Safe Care of the Postnatal Woman and Newborn
  • Day 2: Maternal and Neonatal Deterioration / Resuscitation
  • Day 3: Patient Discharge
  • You will be supported, guided and coached throughout the program by the Midwifery education team.
  • No pre-learning is required for this program

Expressions of Interest open in April each year via an internal application process. 

Pathway to further study

Those who successfully complete this program will enter into the priority pathway for postgraduate studies through our university partner. This pathway is supported by Epworth’s Targeted Scholarships offered through the Epworth Medical Foundation.
