Completion of a transition to specialty practice program (TSP) provides a priority pathway to undertake postgraduate study and the opportunity to apply for a targeted Epworth scholarship. 

Brookes Academy - Epworth HealthCare

This six-month transition program is designed for registered nurses, with limited experience in critical care.

This program provides nurses the opportunity to develop knowledge, confidence and skills in the following specialties:

  • ICU,
  • Emergency or
  • Cardiac Care.

Entry requirements

  • Current registered nurses with AHPRA.
  • Permanent residents or Australian citizens.
  • Completed a graduate year by the commencement of this program.

Duration

  • Two program intakes commencing in February and July each year
  • 6-month program
  • Permanent contract, minimum 0.6 to full time.

Program structure

  • Delivered in a blended learning method, with a combination of self-directed online learning and classroom-based learning
  • Seven study days, taught utilising; case studies, group work and clinical simulation

Learning content

  • Critical Care specialty specific content delivered through online modules and structured face to face learning
  • Additional self-directed modules can be used to develop your professional, academic and clinical skills
  • Pre and post learning content to facilitate translation of theory to practice
  • Professional development is assessed through the completion of clinical hurdles, formative and summative appraisals, an oral presentation, written assignment and a written exam
  • You will be supported, guided and coached throughout the program by the Critical Care Education team
  • No pre-learning is required for this program

Applications

Expressions of Interest open in April and October each year via an internal application process. 

Pathway to further study

Those who successfully complete this program will enter into the priority pathway for postgraduate studies through our university partner. This pathway is supported by Epworth’s Targeted Scholarships offered through the Epworth Medical Foundation.

Successful program completion of the TSP awards 1 credit point towards the Postgraduate Diploma in Critical Care Nursing.

This program is facilitated at all acute Epworth sites:

  • Epworth Eastern (Box Hill) offers positions in Intensive Care and Cardiac Care (including Cath Lab).
  • Epworth Freemasons (East Melbourne) offers positions in Intensive Care.
  • Epworth Geelong offers positions in the Emergency Department, ICU and Cardiac Care.
  • Epworth Richmond offers positions in the Emergency Department, Cardiac Care (including Cath Lab) and Intensive Care.

All study days are conducted at Epworth Richmond.
