Inpatient Surgical Services

Epworth Freemasons supports a variety of surgical specialties across three inpatient units. The surgical units have an integrated team approach to ensure the highest quality of patient care across a range of specialties including:

  • Urology
  • Colorectal
  • General surgery

  • Gynaecology and women’s health
  • Orthopaedics
  • Plastic surgery
  • ENT​

The surgical units have dedicated teams of nursing, medical and allied health staff supported by Clinical Nurse Consultants ensuring contemporary best-practice care and patient educations is provided.


General Medicine / Day Medical Unit

The Medical Unit (Ward Ground East) at Epworth Freemasons is located on the Ground Floor. Patients are admitted either directly to the unit or via the Emergency Department at Epworth Richmond.

The Medical Unit has an integrated team approach to ensure the highest quality of patient care across a range of specialties including:

  • Acute Medical

  • Cardiology
  • Endocrinology
  • Gastroenterology
  • Geriatric Medicine
  • Nephrology
  • Respiratory Medicine

Epworth Freemasons supports the education and training for Junior Doctors, Nurses and Allied Health Staff. Our Doctors may have Medical Students and/or Registrars working with them who may be involved in your care. There are also undergraduate Nursing and Allied Health students on the ward. 

Cancer services

Epworth Freemasons has a comprehensive cancer service caring for people affected by both oncological and hematological disorders (malignant and non-malignant). The inpatient unit delivers standard regimes as well as specialized targeted treatments. These include immunotherapies which are a rapidly emerging area in cancer therapy.

Epworth Freemasons is at the forefront of cancer treatment options, including access to the latest clinical trial treatments as well as newly available / approved treatment options. The team are dedicated to cancer care, focusing on holistic patient care and optimization of outcomes through specialized treatment delivery.

Our Day Oncology unit will shortly be relocating to a new purpose built facility as part of the Grey Street redevelopment and will be collocated alongside our inpatient unit.

Intensive Care Unit

Epworth Freemasons Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is an accredited level 2, 8-bed Intensive Care. Treating over 1,200 patients annually with a wide variety ​of medical problems, the team continually strives to provide the very best of Medical and Nursing care both in the ICU and throughout the hospital. The unit is supported by full-time medical fellows and on-call consultant cover. 

Epworth Freemasons Intensive Care Unit provides care for an extensive array of adult patients, including respiratory, post-surgical, medical, gynaecological, obstetric and oncology.

Epworth Freemasons Maternity

Epworth Freemasons Maternity also cares for families at our Clarendon Street site. This 10-bed postnatal ward is located opposite the Fitzroy Gardens with many of the rooms enjoying exclusive views of Melbourne’s skyline and parkland.

If you are admitted to the 1 West ward in Clarendon Street, you will have a premium car transfer with a capsule safely fitted to transport your newborn. You will also enjoy chef-prepared meals and other features that Epworth Freemasons Maternity is so well known for, including our lactation consultants, settling classes and one-on-one physio visit. A double bed is also available on request.
