Our new Emergency Department

The new Epworth Richmond emergency department opened on 1 February 2016, combining a purpose-designed clinical space with the best of medical technology.

We designed and built the new facility with our patients in mind, to ensure that the space itself would enhance patient care and comfort, and reduce waiting times.

The new emergency department features 35 treatment spaces, each with cardiac monitoring, the latest in technology and patient TV. They also have solid walls, offering improved patient privacy, comfort and reduced noise.

The emergency department also has:

  • two resuscitation bays with video assisted intubation equipment
  • two isolation rooms for airborne infectious diseases
  • CT scanner and X-ray within the emergency department
  • improved access for Ambulance and MICA (mobile intensive care ambulance) vehicles
  • four fast track treatment chairs, for acute and easily treated injuries

The emergency department also has access to a comprehensive list of at-call specialists. We can provide direct referrals to onsite medical and surgical specialists across all major specialties, including cardiac, neuroscience, orthopaedics, general surgery, general medicine and oncology.

Lee Wing

In the new Lee Wing, we have brought together all our critical care services. In close proximity to the emergency department we have the new and expanded intensive care unit, cardiac care unit  and six new operating theatres with state of the art technology, including a hybrid biplane theatre. This enables us to move patients through to these services without delay should their condition require it.
