Colposcopy Clinic at Epworth Freemasons - Epworth HealthCare

Overview and FAQs

When you’ve had an abnormal cervical screening result you shouldn’t have to wait to find out what comes next. If your results indicated “Refer to a specialist” this is because the test detected the need for further investigation, or, abnormal cells were found that require treatment and a follow-up test called a ‘colposcopy test’. The Colposcopy Clinic at Epworth Freemasons is here to give you easy access to this vital screening, without the wait.

  • How quickly can I book in?

Our clinic is set up to provide colposcopy without delay. Our dedicated clinic is structured to enable patients to book just 2 weeks after a referral is made (4 weeks being the longest wait). Your GP can refer you directly to our clinic, for screening and results and we will ensure patients are seen as a high priority with an escalated timeframe.

  • What if I don't have private health insurance?

The Colposcopy Clinic at Epworth Freemasons is here for any woman who doesn’t want to wait for answers, following an abnormal pap smear result. Whether you have private health insurance or not, our team is here to ensure that no woman has to wait for answers, when it matters most.

Our team will explain our fees over the phone to you, there are no hidden costs. Please also refer to our Costs tab, for complete transparency of our fees.

If you do need any further investigations or appointments, our specialists can refer you within Epworth or to a public hospital. It is your health. It is your choice.

  • What can I expect at my appointment?

You should schedule your colposcopy during a time when you don’t have your period and if you need to reschedule your appointment, please contact our team.

The procedure itself feels a lot like a cervical screening test. A colposcope is a microscope which will be placed at the entrance to your vagina so that our specialist can examine your cervix in more detail and to identify any areas of concern.

If required, they might also perform a biopsy where a few millimetres of tissue will be removed from your cervix and sent to a laboratory for analysis.

  • What happens after my colposcopy?

You are safe to continue with your day. If you have had a biopsy, you will need to avoid certain activities for a few days, as guided by your specialist. Once your test results come back our specialist will be in touch to provide the results.
