Epworth Rehabilitation provides a range of programs and services to support people with Parkinson's disease.

Our rehabilitation program addresses physical, functional and emotional challenges and a wide range of other conditions associated with Parkinson's disease. Participants are guided through a variety of activities and educational workshops which are provided by a multidisciplinary team that specialises in Parkinson's disease.

This team includes a rehabilitation doctor, neuropsychologist, clinical psychologist, social worker, occupational therapist, speech pathologist, dietitian and physiotherapist. An exercise component of the program works toward developing strength and restoring balance and movement. Other allied health sessions focus on topics including managing emotional well-being and quality of life, sleep, memory, nutrition and swallowing, communication, energy and fatigue management. With participant consent, family, friends and/or carers are also welcome to attend specific education sessions. The Parkinson's disease rehabilitation program is available as a group program or in a one-on-one setting. The type of program a patient attends will depend on their needs, goals and availability.

LSVT programs

Epworth has specialist-certified clinicians who can offer LSVT (Lee Silverman Voice Treatment), an intensive, evidence-based treatment program for patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease. LSVT programs are based on the principles of neuroplasticity, or the brain's ability to relearn, using specific therapy techniques. LSVT uses a combination of therapist-led exercise and self-practice to maximise an individual's communication and physical ability. LSVT Loud is provided by speech pathologists to enhance voice loudness and intelligibility, as well as facial expression and swallowing. LSVT; Big is provided by physiotherapists and occupational therapists to focus on improving walking speed, balance and body rotation to improve movement. The program requires four weeks of intensive therapy for one hour per day, four days per week. Patients will also be provided with homework exercises to complete daily.
