If you are having joint replacement surgery, rehabilitation can help to rebuild your strength, get you moving safely and have you feeling more confident to get back to your everyday life.
Our programs provide exercise and physical therapy as well as education on a range of topics that can include pain management, minimising your risk of falling or injuring yourself and emotional wellbeing.
Your rehabilitation program will be designed around your personal needs and goals.
How to access our rehabilitation programs
There are a few ways you can access Epworth’s rehabilitation services.
Your care team will work out the best option for you, depending on your personal needs, surgeon’s recommendations and private health insurance cover.
- Rehabilitation at home
A physiotherapist will come to you at home.
They will see you once or twice a week for up to 6 weeks. An occupational therapist is also available to visit you at home, if needed.
This is only available to people who live in metropolitan Melbourne and surrounding areas.
- Outpatient program
Coming to hospital for a few hours a day, once or twice a week.
Some people are safe to go home but are happy to come to hospital for a few hours a day, once or twice a week.
With this option you have the advantage of being at home to recover but still have the support of the Epworth team and the equipment or facilities like a gym or pool in one location.
In most cases, outpatient rehabilitation is also funded through your hospital cover, not your extras.
- Inpatient program
Staying in hospital for about 5-7 days
You might need a short stay in our rehabilitation hospital if it’s not safe for you to go home straight away and you need more time to get moving with medical support.
If your surgeon or physiotherapist recommends this, one of our assessment team members will visit you after your surgery to give you more information and find out what you need. They’ll also help you decide which hospital is best for you.
You may be able to access our rehabilitation services through your private health insurance, if you’re covered.
You can also choose to self-fund and pay up-front, if you prefer.
Whichever option, we will give you the financial information when you are referred to an Epworth Rehabilitation service.
