Dr Joanne Smart

Paediatric Allergist and Immunologist (BSc MBBS PhD FRACP)

Dr Joanne Smart is a Paediatric Allergist and Immunologist who has been involved in the care of children with allergic and immune disorders since 1998.


Joanne completed her medical degree, advanced training in Paediatric Medicine and a PhD researching the underlying immune basis of childhood allergic disease through the University of Melbourne, Department of Paediatrics.


Joanne has been established in private Paediatric allergy practice since 2003 and has strived to create the first comprehensive paediatric allergy service delivering first rate, evidence-based care of the breadth of allergic and immune disorders in the private sector, including the administration of food and drug challenges and immunotherapy.


Over the last 15 years, Joanne has been privileged to provide the often required long term specialist medical care to a generation of infants and children with both allergic and immune disorders to their adolescent and early adult years.



Dr Gary Unglik

Allergist and Clinical Immunologist and Immunopathologist, MBBS (Hons), FRACP, FRCPA


Dr Gary Unglik graduated from Monash Medical School in 1997 with honours. He was an Intern and Registrar at the Alfred Hospital and then a Registrar at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. He obtained a combined fellowship from both the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia in 2007.

He is currently a Consultant Clinical Immunologist and Allergist in the Department of Clinical Immunology and Allergy at The Royal Melbourne Hospital where he was the Head of the Immunopathology Department from 2008 until 2015. Gary is currently a Consultant Pathologist at Melbourne Pathology. He is a member of the Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy.

Gary is actively involved in the education and training of medical students at the University of Melbourne, as well as supervising the training of junior immunologists and allergists.

His professional interests include allergic rhinitis, asthma, urticaria, food allergy and drug allergy.

Gary is also a keen musician and enjoys spending time with his 2 young children.


Dr Julian Bosco 

Allergist and Immunologist (MBBS (Hons) FRACP FRCPA)

Dr Julian Bosco is a clinical immunologist and allergist with a strong interest to diagnose and manage disorders of the immune system. He graduated with Honours in Medicine at the University of New South Wales in 2002. He then pursued specialist Clinical Immunology, Allergy and Immunopathology training in Melbourne and Sydney and was awarded Fellowships in Clinical Immunology & Allergy and Immunopathology in 2011. 

Julian as been a consultant immunologist and allergist with the Epworth Allergy Specialists since 2012. He manages conditions such as urticaria and angioedema, food and drug allergy, immunotherapy and mast cell disorders. He also manages immunodeficiency diseases and inflammatory autoimmune conditions such as Behcet's, sarcoidosis and vasculitis. He also consults at the Alfred and the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospitals and as an immunopathologist at Alfred Pathology and Melbourne Pathology. 

Julian completed his PhD on immune regulation at the Walter Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research in 2015 and continues to be actively involved in clinical research and education. He is also a member of Australian Society for Clinical Immunology and Allergy (ASCIA) and the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI).

Dr Priscilla Auyeung 

Allergist and Immunologist (MBBS, FRACP, FRCPA)


Dr Priscilla Auyeung consults in allergy, including allergic rhinitis (hayfever), food allergy, urticaria (hives), angioedema and drug allergy. Her research interest is in mast cell-mediated disorders. Since 2011, she has been studying chronic idiopathic urticaria, a skin disease in which itchy hives recur without any apparent trigger, at The Royal Melbourne Hospital.


Priscilla underwent specialist training in Clinical Immunology, Allergy and Immunopathology in Perth and Melbourne. She was conferred Fellowships from the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia in 2011. She undertook PhD research studies at The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute and University of Melbourne.


Dr Ania Hargrove

Paediatrician with a special interest in Allergy (MBBS, FRACP)


Dr. Ania Hargrove graduated from the University of Melbourne Medical School in 1996. She became a specialist consultant paediatrician in 2004 after obtaining her Fellowship of the Royal Austalasian College of Physicians.


Dr. Ania has worked for many years at the Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne. Over the years, she has also been extensively involved in teaching and examining medical students in the field of Paediatrics at the Department of Paediatrics, the University of Melbourne.


Dr Ania has also completed further postgraduate training in paediatric allergy at the Royal Children’s Hospital where she continues to work in kids’ allergy clinics.


After one of her children had bad eczema, food allergies and hay fever, Dr Ania experienced first hand the uncertainties and the practicalities surrounding the diagnosis and possible treatment options. She offers a personal perspective on whether to skin prick or not, whether to have an Epipen or not, which creams and ointments to use, how and when.


Dr Sam Mehr

Paediatric Allergist, Immunologist and Immunopathologist  (MBBS, BMedSci, FRCPA, FRACP)


Dr Sam Mehr​ completed his medical degree at the University of Melbourne and trained both at the Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne and Child ren’s Hospital at Westmead, Sydney. He has been a Consultant Allergist/Immunologist for 10 years in both public and private practice.


His current appointments include Consultant Staff Specialist in Allergy and Immunology at the Royal Children’s Hospital, Treasuer of the Australasian Society of Immunology and Allergy, Sub-editor of the Journal of Paediatrics and Child Health and he sits on various committees (Allergy working party for Immunology QAP, Immunotherapy working party of ASCIA, Paediatric subcommittee of ASCIA, AusEE patient support group, Centre for Food & Allergy Research)


Dr Mehr has strong interest in research in Paediatric allergy and immunology, having published peer-reviewed papers published in both local and international journals and has been involved in clinical trials involving peanut desensitisation, molecular characterization of food allergies, and FPIES.


Dr Mehr provides clinical care to children with severe eczema, food/insect/drug allergies, FPIES, eosinophilic esophagitis, hay-fever/insect anaphylaxis (including those requiring immunotherapy), immunodeficiency and periodic fever syndromes. He immensely enjoys his interaction with his patients, parents, and prides himself in providing great clinical care, and being readily contactable for his patients.


Dr David Armstrong 

Paediatric Respiratory and Sleep Physician


David graduated MBChB from the University of Auckland School of Medicine in 1985. He obtained his FRACP in paediatrics in 1992 and completed training in paediatric respiratory medicine in Melbourne in 1994.  David completed his MD thesis “A Prospective Longitudinal Study of Lower Airway Infection and Inflammation in Cystic Fibrosis Infants” in 1999.


David has worked at Monash as a paediatric respiratory and sleep physician since 1996. He has been the Head of the Department of Respiratory Medicine at Monash Children’s Hospital since 2009. David is also the Director of the Paediatric Cystic Fibrosis Centre at Monash, and an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Paediatrics, Monash University.


David was appointed the Co-clinical lead for the Paediatric Clinical Network in the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services in July 2013.


David is interested in the management of children with difficult to manage asthma and all aspects of paediatric sleep disorders.

Dr Sabeena Selvarajah 

Paediatric Allergist and Immunologist (MBBS, FRACP)


Dr Sabeena Selvarajah​ graduated from the University of Western Australia and commenced paediatric training at
Princess Margaret Hospital in Perth.  She moved to Melbourne to complete specialist training in Allergy & Immunology at the Royal Children’s Hospital. She is a Clinical Allergist Immunologist and member of the Australian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy (ASCIA).


Sabeena’s areas of interest include food allergy/anaphylaxis, urticaria (hives), allergic rhinitis (hay fever), immunotherapy, insect allergy and recurrent infection. She is particularly interested in the persistence of food allergy into adolescence and is passionate about helping young adults learn to manage their allergies independently. Her work in this area informed the early stages of the National Allergy Strategy.


Sabeena also has a keen interest in recurrent infections and immunodeficiency. She was recently awarded a prestigious Junior fellowship by the European Society for Immunodeficiencies (ESID).


Outside of work, Sabeena enjoys exploring Melbourne. She is still trying to decide on a footy team to support, suggestions are welcome!


Dr Tim Brettig

Paediatric Allergist and Immunologist (MBBS, FRACP)


Tim graduated from the University of Melbourne in 2008. He completed his Paediatric training at the Royal Children’s Hospital, including his specialisation in Paediatric Allergy and Immunology.

Tim is currently a Paediatric Allergist and Immunologist at the Royal Children’s Hospital and is a member of the Australian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy (ASCIA).


Tim’s areas of interest include food, drug and insect allergy, severe childhood eczema, allergic rhinitis (Hayfever), urticaria (hives) and asthma. He also has an interest in recurrent infections.


Tim is driven by achieving positive outcomes for his patients, and enjoys working closely with patients and their families to achieve this.


Sabeena graduated from the University of Western Australia and commenced paediatric training at
Princess Margaret Hospital in Perth. 

When not at work, Tim enjoys spending time with his wife and two children. He is also passionate about fitness and enjoys running marathons and cycling. 

Dr John Ainsworth​

Paediatrician & Paediatric Allergy & Immunology Trainee
(MBBS (Hons) BSc LLB (Melb) DCH)

Dr Paxton Loke

John completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Melbourne and holds Bachelor degrees in Law and Science.  He subsequently undertook his medical studies at the University of Sydney. John completed his General Paediatric training at The Children's Hospital at Westmead in 2016.  He commenced his Allergy and Immunology training at Westmead in 2014 and was the Immunology fellow in 2017.   

John is interested in all aspects of child health but has a particular passion for immunology. His research interests include the primary prevention of allergic and autoimmune disease and optimising early immune health.

John is very proud to join the Epworth Allergy Specialists team as the inaugural Allergy and Immunology Registrar and complete his training where it all began.  As part of this appointment he is also an Honorary fellow in Allergy and Immunology at The Royal Children's Hospital.

When not at work, John enjoys spending time with his family, catching the latest film, reading and running.  As a Melbourne boy and long suffering Bulldogs supporter, he is still coming to terms with the fact that 2016 actually happened.


Liz Leins RN, PgDipACN(Paed), MN (Melb)

Paediatric Eczem a Nurse Practitioner


Liz has practised in Dermatology at the Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH), Melbourne, since 2001. She was endorsed as a Paediatric Eczema Nurse Practitioner in 2008 and continues to be a key member of the multidisciplinary Dermatology team at the RCH as well as now offering a private paediatric eczema service at Epworth. Liz began at the RCH in 1998 as a graduate nurse and since then has attained a Diploma in Advanced Clinical Nursing in Infant, Child and Adolescent Health, and a Masters of Nursing, from the University of Melbourne.


Liz’s role is focused on educating ng and supporting families and healthcare professionals in the management of eczema. She has been involved in the setup and running of specialised eczema clinics and the development of educational resources for eczema. Liz is also committed to up-skilling general practitioners, paediatricians, and maternal and child health nurses in the management of eczema.


As a Nurse Practitioner, Liz is able to offer families extended consultations allowing time for education and demonstration of treatments, resulting in optimal patient outcomes and quality of care.


Rebecca Gibson (RN) 

Nurse Unit Manager/Paediatric Allergy Nurse Practitioner​​ Epworth Allergy Specialists

Rebecca has worked in the area of paediatric allergy for the past ten years. She first started at The Royal Children’s Hospital in 2005 and moved across to Epworth Richmond in 2011 where she undertakes the roles of Nurse Unit Manager.

Rebecca has also completed her Masters Degree in Nursing from Flinders University and is now endorsed as a Paediatric Allergy Nurse Practitioner. She will be commencing private practice at Epworth Allergy Specialists in October 2016 and offer services for the evaluation and management of:

  • immediate Food allergies and anaphylaxis
  • eczema
  • hay fever

She is also able to arrange for skin prick testing and oral food challenges if indicated.

Dr Jayne Smart 

Paediatrician with a special interest in Allergy (MBBS, FRACP)

Dr Jayne SmartJayne is a General and Developmental Paediatrician who has extensive experience in the management of a wide range of medical, developmental and behavioural problems in children from birth through adolescence.

Jayne Studied medicine at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne in England and moved to Melbourne in 1997.  She completed her specialist's paediatric training at The Royal Children’s Hospital in 2008.  She worked in the Allergy Department at the Royal Children’s Hospital as a consultant paediatrician between 2008 and 2013 and completed further specialists training (Allergy Training Program for Paediatricians) at The Royal Children’s in 2011.  She also works in the Paediatric Continence Clinic at Monash Medical Center and in private practice at Victoria Children’s Clinic in Malvern.

As well as being a member of the Royal Australian College of Physicians, Jayne is a professional member of the Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy and Neurodevelopmental  and Behavioural Paediatric Society of Australasia.  
Jayne is committed to family centred care and works closely with families to ensure the best possible outcome for the children she treats.
