Moderator: Mr Russel Krawitz, Endocrine and General Surgeon
Overview
4 fast updates on common endocrine conditions, followed by moderated panel Q&A.
Topics/Presenters/Learning outcomes:
1. Thyroid, Adrenal and Parathyroid: an endocrine update for general practice
Presented by Dr Reetu Gogna, Endocrinologist
This quick-fire update focuses on contemporary medical management strategies for common conditions, including a nuanced approach to subclinical hypothyroidism and thyroid nodules, the essential workup for adrenal incidentalomas, and the evolving guidelines for managing primary hyperparathyroidism from a medical perspective.
Learning Outcome: Outline the current evidence-based approach to the investigation and medical management of common endocrine conditions.
2. Management of thyroid nodules
Presented by Ms Huan Yi Sia, Endocrine and General Surgeon
Thyroid disorders affect up to 15% of the Australian population. GPs are often the first line of defence for diagnosing and managing thyroid disorders. Of these, thyroid nodules are common, often detected during routine checkups or other health screenings. This presentation provides an update to the management of thyroid nodules.
Learning Outcome: Identify the thyroid nodules that require further investigations and review their management.
3. Adrenal tumours: an evidence-based guide to practice
Presented by Dr Belinda Hii, Endocrine and General Surgeon
Adrenal incidentalomas (AIs) are common with increasing usage of imaging and an aging population. Many of these will not impact patients, but up to 20% will be functional and 3-7% malignant. We discuss an evidence based approach to investigation and diagnosis of clinically relevant adrenal tumours, and the follow up of operatively and non-operatively managed adrenal masses.
Learning Outcome: Review imaging features of benign and malignant adrenal masses and management of adrenal tumours.
4. Parathyroid disease
Presented by Mr Russel Krawitz, Endocrine and General Surgeon
The diagnosis of primary hyperparathyroidism, work-up, surgical management and aftercare:
- Biochemical diagnosis of hyperparathyroidism - differentiating primary from secondary causes
- Work-up for hyperparathyroidism - imaging modalities
- Definitive surgical management and aftercare
Learning Outcomes: Discuss an initial management plan for patients with hyperparathyroidism. Outline the surgical management options and expectations from surgical care.
