It also highlights common procedures, equipping clinicians to make appropriate referrals and support informed patient decision-making.

Topic 2: Anal cancer screening & modern proctology solutions

Presented by Dr Matt Marino, Colorectal Surgeon, General Surgeon
An update on anal cancer screening, including risk factors, evolving terminology, and the growing role of high-resolution anoscopy in detecting and managing pre-cancerous disease. It also explores modern proctology approaches to common conditions such as haemorrhoids and fistulas, alongside the importance of patient-centred care, including consideration of sexual health and wellbeing in clinical decision-making.

Learning outcomes:

  1. Differentiate functional and aesthetic surgical indications and apply appropriate Medicare item number considerations to guide referrals and patient counselling
  2. Identify patient groups that require anal cancer screening and be familiar with international guidelines
