Topic 1: Managing reflux in 2025
Presented by Ms Mary Ann Johnson, Upper GI and General surgeon
Learning outcome - Outline the management and treatment of reflux: investigation, medical management and post surgical expectations.
Overview – Discussion and case study will include optimal medical management and timing for PPIs, when to refer for gastroscopy, understanding atypical reflux symptoms, expected recovery from anti-reflux surgery and demystifying post-fundoplication syndrome.
Topic 2: Managing Upper GI malignancy – oesophageal and gastric cancer
Presented by Dr Enoch Wong, Upper GI and General surgeon
Learning outcome - Discuss UGI malignancy and in particular, its presentation and indications for referral.
Overview – Discussion and case study will include the prevalence, incidence, types, prognosis of UGI cancer, presentation, red flags and when to refer, investigation and staging – endoscopy, imaging, staging laparoscopy, treatment options, surgical approaches.
Topic 3: A practical approach to liver lesions
Presented by Dr Matilda Anderson, Upper GI and HPB surgeon
Learning outcome - Identify common benign and malignant liver lesions and their subsequent investigation and management.
Overview – review and discussion on common benign liver lesions, when surveillance is required, when referral is referral required, an update on malignant liver lesions identifying concerning features – patient and imaging factors and best radiological and serological tests.
