Epworth Geelong will double its cancer treatment capacity to meet the region’s growing population, with a significant redevelopment of the Day Oncology service underway.

The new Day Oncology department forms part of Epworth HealthCare’s broader investment in Geelong, following recent expansions including two new operating theatres that significantly increased surgical capacity.

The oncology redevelopment is the next stage in strengthening the hospital’s role as a leading provider of specialist healthcare in the region.

The redevelopment will increase the number of chemotherapy chairs from 10 to 20 and introduce two additional treatment beds, allowing more patients to access care without travelling to Melbourne.

The new unit has been designed to create a holistic environment for patients, with calming interior, updated furniture and advanced equipment.

Epworth Geelong Executive General Manager Scott Norman said the investment reflects the hospital’s long-term commitment to improving access to high-quality cancer services in the region.

There will be no disruption to current patient services during construction, as the original department is located on a different floor. It will eventually be repurposed as a new ward. The new day oncology service will be located on level three.

A locally based construction firm has been appointed to deliver the oncology upgrade, with construction scheduled to run through the Christmas period, before taking patients in June 2026.
