What is Epworth at Home - Hospital in the home?
Epworth at Home - Hospital in the home allows you to receive hospital-level care in the comfort of your own home. While you're admitted to this program, doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals will visit you daily to provide medical and nursing care.
We recommend having a carer at home to support you. If you need extra help - such as cleaning, meal preparation, or assistance with showering - please let us know. We can refer you to appropriate services.
How to access the service?
- If you're eligible, your treating doctor may already have offered this service.
- If not, ask your GP, ward nurse or Epworth doctor whether it’s suitable for you.
- If it is, we’ll contact you or visit you in hospital to discuss your medical needs, home setup and available support.
Everyone involved must agree that this is the best option for you before we proceed.
Most private health insurance policies cover this service – we’ll check your coverage for you in advance.

Fees and charges
- You’ll pay the same costs as if you were staying in hospital.
- Most services are covered by private health insurance, but some costs depend on your level of cover.
- Medications started during your treatment may be covered; however, medications you were already taking before admission are not.
- Blood tests ordered by our doctors are billed separately by Melbourne Pathology (03 9287 7888).
- Imaging services (X-rays, CT scans, etc.) are billed separately by Radiology Victoria (03 9516 2924).
- There are no out-of-pocket costs for medical visits.
- Medical attendance fees are included in your hospital invoice and are itemised. Epworth guarantees that only the scheduled fee is charged, so the full amount is rebated through Medicare and your private health insurance.
