The Epworth Gait Clinic is a multidisciplinary assessment service that helps identify key problems limiting a person’s ability to walk and move and to determine the most effective treatment or management plan.

Who is the gait clinic for?

The Gait Clinic is here to help people who are having trouble with walking. You might benefit from the clinic if you are:

  • Recovering from a neurological condition, such as a stroke or brain injury
  • Managing a complex orthopaedic injury - whether you need support to walk again or you're working towards more advanced goals like running

Our team is here to support your recovery and help you move with confidence.

What to expect

Your first appointment will be a detailed clinical assessment with a senior physiotherapist.

They will look at:

  • your medical history
  • how you currently walk
  • your balance, strength, movement and any muscle tightness or spasticity
  • your personal goals.

This helps us understand your needs and plan the best treatment for you.

What comes next?

After your assessment:

  • Our team will review your walking videos and test results
  • We’ll create a tailored treatment plan to improve your walking
  • You’ll have a follow-up appointment with a rehabilitation physician (in person or via telehealth to discuss your results and next steps.

Your plan may include:

  • a rehabilitation program (e.g. strength training, stretching, balance and falls prevention, gait re-education)
  • spasticity management
  • referral to other specialists like orthotists or surgeons if needed.

Fee information

Appointment fees may be covered by:

  • private health insurance (hospital or extras cover)
  • TAC or WorkSafe
  • NDIS plans (self-managed or plan-managed)
  • self-funding (paying on the day).

Our team can help explain your options.

Follow-up appointments will be arranged as needed.
