Areas of Interest
Prof William Chan is Professor of Medicine at the University of Melbourne and Adjunct Lecturer at Monash University. He is a consultant and interventional cardiologist as well as a clinician investigator. His public appointments are based at the Western Health and The Alfred, where he works as a consultant cardiologist with close affiliation to the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute. He is also the Head of Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratories at Western Health and leads the Interventional Services Program. Prof Chan is the co-founder of the Western Health Cardiogenic Shock Initiative in collaboration with Alfred Health. This treatment platform, the first in Victoria, streamlines the care of very sick patients who present in cardiogenic shock due to severe heart attacks.
Prof Chan's clinical interests include transradial coronary interventions in elective and STEMI settings; complex coronary interventions; and catheter based alcohol septal ablation for hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy. His research interests encompass coronary artery disease, cardiac registries and outcomes, cardiogenic shock, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and microcirculatory dysfunction. Prof Chan supervises basic physician trainees, cardiology advanced trainees, PhD fellows and medical students.
