DrJanindu (Jan)Goonawardena

Jan is an Australian trained upper gastrointestinal and general surgeon with a particular interest in oesophageal and stomach cancer surgery, minimally invasive keyhole reflux, gallbladder and hernia surgery, bariatric surgery and interventional endoscopy including endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP).

Jan completed his general surgical training at Eastern Health and obtained his Fellowship from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in 2022. He was subsequently selected to the prestigious upper gastrointestinal fellowship training program and undertook three more years of subspeciality training in bariatric and upper gastrointestinal surgery at Nepean Hospital in New South Wales and Box Hill Hospital in Victoria. He was awarded Fellowship from the Australian and Aotearoa New Zealand Gastric and Oesophageal Surgery Association (FAANZGOSA) in 2025.

He has a particular interest in oesophageal and stomach cancer research. He has published widely, presented at international and national conferences and received numerous national awards.

Jan enjoys meeting with patients and their families, explaining their condition, answering their questions, and creating personalised treatment plans that best suit their individual needs. He is known for his compassionate and empathetic approach to patient care, combined with exceptional professionalism and meticulous attention to detail during surgery. Outside work he enjoys spending time with his young family.
