Nicholas Maartens is an experienced Melbourne based neurosurgeon with a dual private / public commitment at the Alfred Hospital and a senior lecturer at Monash University. He undertook his neurosurgical training at the Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford where he was one of the last registrars personally trained by Christopher Adams. He then did fellowship training in the USA specialising in pituitary surgery.

He has performed over 14000 neurosurgical procedures and has published more than 60 academic papers including 12 book chapters. He has also reviewed for the journals Neurosurgery, Journal of Neurosurgery and Journal of Clinical Neurosciences.

He is both a general neurosurgeon specialising in complex spine surgery and cranial microsurgery and a specialist endoscopic skull base pituitary surgeon . He is affiliated to the William Buckland Radiotherapy Centre at the Alfred Hospital where he is part of the brain and spinal neurooncology team. He leads the Melbourne Pituitary Neuroendocrine Service and is also Director of the Melbourne Pituitary Neuroendocrine Service.
