Areas of Interest
Associate Professor Lih-Ming Wong is a urologist with sub-specialty interest and training in uro-oncology. He enjoys discussing urological symptoms and diseases with his patients to help them better understand the treatments available. As a uro-oncologist, Ming is experienced in managing cancers in the prostate, bladder, kidney and testis. Ming is a high-volume robotic surgeon, and an experienced mentor and proctor for other urologists commencing robotic surgery.
A medical graduate of Melbourne University, Ming completed his urology training in Victoria in 2009. Subsequently, he spent one year in Addenbrookes Hospital Cambridge, and two years at Princess Margaret Hospital Toronto in uro-oncology fellowship training.
He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery, University of Melbourne and an non-executive director on the Aitkenhead Centre for Medical Discovery (ACMD) board. Ming has completed a Postgraduate Diploma of Surgical Anatomy, a Masters of Surgery and Doctor of Medical Science. He obtained his L.Mus.A in violin at age 15, and attended Melbourne Grammar school on a full music scholarship. During his urology training, Ming was awarded the Keith Kirkland prize for best trainee research (national).
Ming is the principal investigator for several investigator-led multicentre prospective trials examining imaging (MRI prostate and PSMA-PET/CT) in prostate cancer. Ming has presented papers at multiple international conferences and also published manuscripts in major journals such as European Urology, British Journal of Cancer, Journal of Urology (1st author) and The Lancet (co-author).
In pursuit of excellence of patient care, Ming was instrumental in establishing the successful public-private robotic surgery collaboration in the St Vincent’s Precinct in 2019, successfully securing funding from the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia for a full-time prostate cancer nurse in 2020; and establishing a WCMICS supported nurse led discharge clinic at SVH. Together in 2016, the team at Goulburn Valley Health won an Excellence in Cancer Care Award for Prostate Cancer Services, at the Victorian Public Healthcare Awards.
